When you’re ready to ask, do it thoughtfully:

  1. Ask in person if possible, or send a polite, professional email.

  2. Begin with gratitude: “I really enjoyed your class this year and learned a lot about…”

  3. Explain why you’re asking them specifically — maybe they’ve seen your growth or share your passion for your future career.

  4. Share the details:

    • What the letter is for (college, scholarship, program, etc.)

    • When it’s due

    • How to submit it

  5. Offer to provide materials that make their job easier (see next section!).

  6. Follow up gently a week before the deadline, if needed — but always with kindness and appreciation.

Provide Helpful Information to Your Recommender

Make it easy for them to write a detailed, personal letter. Provide:

  • A short summary or “brag sheet” with your GPA, activities, volunteer work, or goals.

  • A list of programs or colleges you’re applying to (and why you chose them).

  • Any specific points you’d love them to mention — like leadership in class, community involvement, or perseverance.

  • Your resume or academic profile, if you have one.

  • Clear instructions for submission (link, upload, or email address).
