This cannot be stressed enough: do not wait until the last minute.

  • Your teachers and mentors write dozens of letters each semester. Respect their time by asking at least 3–4 weeks before the deadline.

  • If possible, ask even earlier — before application season gets busy (late summer or early fall).

  • Avoid sending a message like “Can you write me a letter by Friday?” (especially when it’s Wednesday!). Give them enough time to think, write, and personalize your letter.

  • Always share the exact deadline and how the letter should be submitted (upload link, email, etc.).

Bonus Tip:

If you’re requesting multiple letters, make a list of all your deadlines in one place. This shows you’re organized and considerate — and your recommenders will appreciate it.
