Module 4: Securing Recommendation Letters
This cannot be stressed enough: do not wait until the last minute.
Your teachers and mentors write dozens of letters each semester. Respect their time by asking at least 3–4 weeks before the deadline.
If possible, ask even earlier — before application season gets busy (late summer or early fall).
Avoid sending a message like “Can you write me a letter by Friday?” (especially when it’s Wednesday!). Give them enough time to think, write, and personalize your letter.
Always share the exact deadline and how the letter should be submitted (upload link, email, etc.).
Bonus Tip:
If you’re requesting multiple letters, make a list of all your deadlines in one place. This shows you’re organized and considerate — and your recommenders will appreciate it.
